Europe: Top Visited Destination on the Planet

In the World Tourism Organisation 2015 Rankings Europe (+3%) led growth in absolute terms, welcoming 15 million more international tourists in 2014 to reach a total 582 million arrivals. Europe, which accounts for 41% of worldwide international tourism receipts, saw the largest increase in absolute terms: up by US$ 17 billion to reach US$ 509 billion (euro 383 bn). Europe tops the charts with 5 Nations in the top 10 for international tourist arrivals (France, Spain, Italy, Germany and the UK).

Europe, with six economies in the top 10, continues to dominate the travel rankings thanks to its world-class tourism service infrastructure, excellent health and hygiene conditions, and—notably, thanks to the Schengen Area—high degree of international openness and integration.

The 2015 edition of the TTCI of the World Economic Forum covers 141 economies worldwide. Of the Top 10 Countries, 6 are European. Spain tops the 2015 edition of the TTCI global rankings for the first time, followed by France (2nd), Germany (3rd), the United States (4th), the United Kingdom (5th), Switzerland (6th), Australia (7th), Italy (8th), Japan (9th) and Canada (10th). However, there are still some significant divides across the region—not all European countries are making the most of their cultural resources, prioritizing the T&T (Travel & Tourism) sector to respond to new trends, or fostering a dynamic business environment by removing red tape.
