Mediterranean Diet
The healthiest diet in the world
If you’re looking for a heart-healthy eating plan, the Mediterranean diet might be right for you. Perhaps the world’s healthiest diet, the Mediterranean Diet is abundant in fruits, vegetables, whole grains, legumes and olive oil. It features fish and poultry—lean sources of protein—over red meat, which contains more saturated fat. A Mediterranean diet incorporates the traditional healthy living habits of people from countries bordering the Mediterranean Sea, including Italy, France, Greece and Spain.
Research* from 2013 has shown that the traditional Mediterranean diet reduces the risk of heart disease. In fact, an analysis of more than 1.5 million Thealthy adults demonstrated that following a Mediterranean diet was associated with a reduced risk of death from heart disease and cancer, as well as a reduced incidence of Parkinson’s and Alzheimer’s diseases.
*(Research from academic institutions across Spain, including the Universities of Barcelona, Valencia, Malaga and Navarra. A randomised controlled trial (RCT) involving people at risk of cardiovascular disease. Funded by the Spanish government and other public sources and was published in the peer-reviewed New England Journal of Medicine).
