This speech, made by former President of the European Parliament Enrique Barón Crespo at the University of Peace (Costa Rica, 17/10/2013) talks about how the process of European peace has been one of gentle weaving through the increasing integration of the European Union, and why it is vital for these threads to continue to be woven.
The main topic of discussion was the situation of Europe in 1914, the year of the beginning of the First World War, a conflict that most Europeans still call the Great War, la “Grande Guerre”. A continental civil war that unleashed destruction and havoc until 1945 with the Second World War. As a consequence of this inhuman conflict, almost 100 million human beings died all over the world. Most of them were civilians. The EU is the peace banner under which such devastating European conflicts can be avoided in the future.
